As a young girl, Mildred Bliss née Barnes was an avid collector of prints. She assembled an exceptional collection of etchings and engravings, as she was particularly astute in obtaining quality impressions and states. Favorite artists included James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Rembrandt van Rijn. The Blisses later gave away or sold for endowment much of this collection. Over the years, the Blisses and Dumbarton Oaks also have been given important historical and art photographs.
