Description
Following restoration work by the Byzantine Institute in the Chora Monastery (Kariye Camii) in Istanbul from 1947-1954, Lawrence Majewski and Ernest Hawkins ordered replicas of the head of the Virgin from the Deesis mosaic. Latex molds were made, and two plaster casts made from the molds. Each mold was then painted in front of the original by local artists.
