The Coins and Seals Collection includes the most comprehensive collection of Byzantine coins and the largest collection of Byzantine lead seals in the world. Alongside those from Byzantium, the collection includes sizeable holdings of late Roman and Arab-Byzantine coins. The 17,000 Byzantine lead seals at Dumbarton Oaks are a valuable resource for scholars interested in all facets of Byzantium. Together, the coins struck by the imperial government and the seals commissioned by individual Byzantines offer two complementary windows into the empire’s history, society, faith, and politics.
We are endeavoring to publish both collections online. Links to both catalogues can be found below, as can a discussion of the history of the collection, online exhibitions, and education activities focused on coins and seals.
