Compton was hired by the Byzantine Institute in the mid 1950's to make copies of sections of the newly restored frescoes in the Parekklesion in the Chora Monastery (Kariye Djamii) in Istanbul. According to an oral history interview with Ercüment Atabay, undertaken by Günder Varinlioğlu on May 19, 2011, Compton left to work at the British Museum after he completed the replicas. He later went to the Ashmolean Museum as a restorer.
