Georg Braun (editor) and Frans Hogenberg (engraver) were geographers/topographers who together published a series of six volumes of printed townplans, Civitates Orbis Terrarum [The Towns of the World] (Cologne, 1572-1618). These volumes comprised over 360 plates showing 546 city plans and views. These were later reissued by Jan Jansson, Northern Cities of Europe, in Amsterdam, ca.1660. Hogenberg was Flemish and also engraved many of the maps in the first editions of Ortelius' atlases. The Civitates Orbis Terrarum is one of the most important works of early cartography and topographical illustration and is the first systematic depiction of views of cities throughout the world. This work was also designed to complement Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas. Both of these were produced in response to a new interest in the nature of the world Western Europeans.
